Description: Nowata, OK - Former Owasso Oklahoma Police Office Found Not Guilty On Assault Charge

The State of Oklahoma charged Michael Dewain Denton with:

1. ASSAULT AND BATTERY WITH DEADLY WEAPON

2. RECKLESS CONDUCT WITH FIREARM

Denton, an Owasso, Oklahoma police officer was involved in a high speed chase on June 14, 2015 that ended in the arrest of Cody Matthews. The State claimed that Denton used excessive force when he struck Matthews multiple times after Matthew's vehicle was stopped including hitting him with the butt of the shotgun that he was carrying.

Denton's lawyer, Tulsa criminal defense lawyers Pat Hunt, claimed that the level of force used by Denton was justified because of the circumstances including injury or death to Denton and other officers involved in subduing Matthews.

Testimony during the trial by two officers involved in the chase indicated that Matthew was holding a knife to his own throat when the pickup that he was driving became stuck in a field.
